Worked example: Thanksgiving dinner at 4pm

Serve at 16:00. Your turkey recipe takes 4 hours plus 40 minutes of rest; casserole takes 30 minutes and rolls take 10 minutes.

  1. Work back through the rest

16:00 minus 40 minutes: take the turkey out at 3:20 PM.

  2. Subtract the turkey's cook time

Put the turkey in at 11:20 AM. Preheat 20 minutes earlier, at 11:00 AM.

  3. Use the oven while the turkey rests

Casserole goes in at 3:20 PM and finishes at 15:50. Then bake the rolls from 15:50 to 16:00.

Result: Turkey in 11:20; turkey out and casserole in 15:20; rolls in 15:50; serve 16:00.

The minutes and temperatures are editable recipe examples, not cooking recommendations. Allow for temperature changes and safe hot holding. Bake and cool pie beforehand.

A little help in the kitchen

How to use it

  1. Choose your serving date, time, time zone and guests. Canadian Thanksgiving is in October; use your own dinner date.

  2. Enter your turkey or other main roast's recipe cooking time, rest time and oven temperature. The US page starts in Fahrenheit and Canada in Celsius. You can also use the roast time calculator where it has a matching official timetable; unsupported selections require your recipe time.

  3. Edit the casserole and rolls examples, or choose Add dish for your own dishes. Their cook times of 30 and 10 minutes are examples. Enter every oven dish's recipe temperature. Move oven sides into the order you want to bake them; hob dishes run independently.

  4. If you're serving pie, bake and cool it before the dinner oven schedule; follow your recipe's storage instructions. Plan it beforehand, separately from these dinner slots and calendar events.

  5. Choose Calculate timeline. Check oven warnings and the country's food thermometer guidance. Start each step's timer when you begin that task. Save, share a link, print or download one calendar event per dinner step.

How it works

Turkey out = serving time minus rest time. Turkey in = turkey out minus cooking time. The planner allows 20 minutes to preheat before the first oven task; follow your oven maker's instructions if it needs a different allowance.

One-oven planning is on by default. Oven sides cook one after another in list order, with the final dish ending at serving time. They use the turkey's rest window first. If the sides need longer, their earlier slots overlap roasting and different oven temperatures trigger a warning. Moving dishes in the list changes their oven order; the tool keeps the serving time fixed.

Hob tasks finish at serving time independently. Check tray space, hob capacity and temperature-change time yourself. Earlier sides may need safe hot holding. Guests describe the menu and do not scale portions or cooking time. Follow your recipe's storage instructions for pie and other dishes made ahead.

Times use the selected time zone, including previous days and daylight saving. A finished timer or timeline cannot confirm food safety. Measure internal temperature with a food thermometer and follow USDA FSIS guidance in the US or Health Canada guidance in Canada.

Frequently asked questions

When should I put the turkey in for a 4pm Thanksgiving dinner?

For the example's 4-hour recipe time and 40-minute rest, preheat at 11:00, put the turkey in at 11:20 and take it out at 15:20. Bake casserole from 15:20 to 15:50, then rolls until 16:00. Enter the actual times and temperatures from your recipes.

Can I make Thanksgiving dinner with one oven?

The planner gives oven sides consecutive slots while the turkey rests. If they need more time, it warns about different temperatures during any overlap with the roast. Check oven space, allow time to change the temperature, and resolve warnings before cooking.

Can I change the default oven temperatures?

Yes. The turkey, casserole and rolls start with editable example settings: 325°F on the US page and 180°C on the Canadian page. Replace them with the temperatures from your own recipes or packaging. These defaults are not cooking recommendations.

Where does pumpkin pie fit in the timeline?

If you're serving pie, plan its baking and cooling beforehand using your recipe. Casserole and rolls are editable starting dishes; Add dish lets you enter any other dish. The prepare-ahead pie reminder does not add an oven slot or calendar event.

Can I use this for Canadian Thanksgiving in October?

Yes. Choose Canada and your October dinner date. The Canadian page starts in Celsius and uses Health Canada's whole-bird temperature guidance. The US page starts in Fahrenheit and uses USDA FSIS guidance.

Can I save the plan and take it to the kitchen?

Save settings on this device, copy a share link, print the result, or download an .ics file with one event per dinner step. Timers run while the page stays open and reset on refresh or recalculation. Shared links include your settings; no account is needed.
